When does becoming invisible cease to protect the soul and begin to erase it from the world?

There is a stone hall without windows and without mirrors, where the torches burn without lighting the hands that would have kindled them — the light exists without origin, warm and ownerless, and the door vanishes as soon as it closes behind whoever enters. There reigns the first of the seventy-two of the Ars Goetia, king of the East at the head of sixty-six legions, to whom tradition gave an office that sums up, as few do, the silent manner in which a life is lost: to make a man invisible. The name that this absence takes, when it consents to speak, is Bael.

In the first volume of Goetic Magic, Eisenheim — the evocator — calls Bael by the art, sits before the king who does not appear, and questions him without asking anything of him. The book does not show the rite, only the conversation that followed. Bael answers with cold calm and a lucidity that at times seems like wisdom: he rarely lies outright, he inverts — he takes a living word (discretion, reserve, silence, humility) and twists it one degree, only one, until it still seems the same and already means the opposite. Across ten interrogations, the conversation descends from the discretion that serves to the flight that erases: the face traded for a mask, the eternal “not yet” that postpones an entire life, the cloak of the just worn by the coward, the man who vanishes from his own debts, and shame — which is not calculation, but wound. Each topic closes with a Note of discernment, in the author’s voice, naming the shadow examined and the virtue it holds captive.

It is not a manual, and it is not fiction: it is the record of a real evocation, set down in the form of a dialogue. And what it measures is the exact distance between the discretion that serves without hiding and the disappearance that erases the soul from the world — between knowing how to keep silent and not daring to appear.
